Molecule of the Week: Vitamin C

  • (R)-3,4-dihydroxy-5-((S)- 1,2-dihydroxyethyl)furan-2(5H)-one

 

Vitamin C was first isolated by biochemist Dr. Albert Szent-Gyorgi in 1928! It is abundant in many of the foods we eat, but most notably citrus fruits! Vitamin C performs several roles in the human body including serving as an anti-oxidant, and playing an important role in the synthesis of norepinephrine and the formation of several enzymes!
