Molecule of the Week: Amphetamine

This week’s #MOTW is Amphetamine! Amphetamine was first synthesized by a Romanian chemist named L. Edeleanu in 1887. It is a CNS stimulant and is sold as a psychoactive drug under trade names like Adderall and Benzedrine.

Amphetamine is classified as a Schedule II controlled substance and has been banned in many sports including baseball. Amphetamines have a strong effects on heart and breathing rates and is a substance that could lead to addiction. Amphetamine is used to treat attention deficit hyperactivity disorders (ADHD) and narcolepsy and should never be used recreationally.
